Distance Learning Course Syllabus – Fall Semester 2020
A. Zoom class and group lesson participation – participating fully in all Zoom class activities, discussions, and small group lessons at all times, and demonstrating acceptable attitudes and behavior. This includes, but is not limited to: attending Zoom classes and lessons (absences will lower your participation grade), being on time (tardies will also affect your grade), bringing the required materials (instrument, music, etc.), being attentive, being respectful to director and classmates, and following all Zoom meeting rules and expectations. Students are expected to attend ALL Zoom morning class meetings and the afternoon one-hour weekly group lessons (schedule posted in Google Classroom, PHS Music website, and Parent Link). 65% of the fall semester grade will be based upon participation.
B. Quizzes – Quizzes will be given periodically throughout the semester and will be announced a week in advance. Quizzes will be generally based upon the popular music of each decade (1950’s, 1960’s, etc.), and upon the music terms, elements, and concepts covered in discussion. If a student pays attention and participates in the morning Zoom class meetings, they will not need to study for the quizzes. 26% of the fall semester grade will be based upon quizzes.
C. Oral Report – Students will give one oral report about the musician of their choice. Oral reports will be based upon why the student admires and enjoys the music of the artist or group, but should NOT be a Wikipedia article style presentation. Students will be given directions and criteria for the oral report. The report will be a minimum of 3 minutes and a maximum of 5 minutes. 9% of the fall semester grade will be based upon the oral report.
